Lincoln dominates in the 2013 Oscar Nominations
It’s award show time! The Golden Globes are this Sunday and the Academy Awards have put out their nominations.
Lincoln is the movie to beat with 12 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Adapted Screenplay. Other nominees for Best Picture include Amour, Argo, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Django Unchained, Les Misérables, Life of Pi, Silver Linings Playbook, and Zero Dark Thirty. Surprisingly, Moonrise Kingdom barely received any Oscar nods, including missing out on Best Picture which was deemed a sure thing by critics.
Clearly, the Academy wants to shake things up this year. Notably, neither Ben Affleck (Argo) nor Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty) received Best Director nominations. Of the nominees, only Spielberg was expected to be there.
Best Actor is more in line with expectations, putting up Hugh Jackman (Les Misérables), Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln), and Denzel Washington (Flight). Best Actress has both the youngest and oldest nominees, Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) at 9 with Emmanuelle Riva (Amour) at 85. Jennifer Lawrence has her second Oscar nomination in three years with Silver Linings Playbook.
For Canadians this is a good year as well. Life of Pi is based off a Canadian book by Yann Martel. Mychael Danna, the Toronto-based composer, has two nominations for Life of Pi (Original Song and Original Score) and for the third year running Canadians find themselves in the Foreign Film category. This year, Rebelle (War Witch) is nominated against Amour from Austria which has four other nominations.

in terms of the canadian connection – not to mention the fact that Life of Pi is written by a Canadian
Yes! I feel totally stupid not remembering that Life of Pi was written by a Canadian. But I guess there are Canadian connections to loads of movies sometimes because they are filmed in Canada or (like in Argo) there’s Canadian characters/actors that aren’t nominated. But thanks for mentioning, I’ve fixed that now.
