Sundance 2013 Coverage: Films to look for during the festival
The Sundance Festival happens every year in Park City as a way to celebrate the art of film and compete against one another. The winners and most liked are often then given a wide release to the general public. Many of you may remember the film “Like Crazy” starring Anton Yelchin and Felicity Jones, which was one of those films to get the full treatment.
Like the years before, this year has dozens of movies being showcased in the festival. Some have been anticipated since their announcement, and others are shrowded in mystery. Below is a small list of some of the movies I hope to catch in this year’s festival because of their intriguing premise or the names that have been attached to them.
Jobs
Ashton Kutcher stars as the titular Steve Jobs in this biopic of the founder of Apple. It takes us through the beginning of the company starting with Jobs dropping out of college and shows us how the Apple corporation got started. What draws me most to this movie is the unusual choice of casting. Ashton Kutcher is known mostly for his comedic roles such as Kelso in “That 70’s Show,” so seeing him not only in a drama, but playing an actual person as well seems to be out of his usual type-cast. It will be interesting to his this interpretation of the life of Steve Jobs.
S-VHS
Fans of this year’s VHS rejoice! For the sequel is here! Unfortunately, I have yet to experience the horror that is VHS, but it’s in redbox now, so I’ve got it in my scope! From what I understand, the VHS films are “found footage” horror films which center around a series of VHS tapes containing what appears to be supernatural footage. I’ll admit I’m no way close to being knowledgeable about these films, as what I know I basically got from either the trailer of the first film or from IMDb, but I was hooked as soon as I saw the trailer, so S-VHS is definitely on my watch-list for the festival!
Virtually Heroes
Have you ever wondered what would happen if the characters of Call of Duty became self-aware? I hadn’t until I heard about this movie! Robert Baker plays a character named Books, a main character in a Call of Duty-esque video game that becomes self-aware and begins to become fed up with the world around him, which takes him on a journey to find a monk for advice on how to cope with this world. To me, this movie sounds like a live-action version of “Wreck it Ralph,” but being that it’s made it to Sundance, I’m sure that it’ll be much more than that.
As I said before, there are dozens of films in the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, so needless to say these three films are just the tip of the iceberg. Check back often to catch up on more Sundance news or to check up on what movies I recommend adding to your Sundance roster! The film festival takes place January 17-27, 2013 in Park City, Utah, but the films show in other theaters in Utah as well.
