'Castle' Recap Episode 5.02 "Cloudy With a Chance of Murder"
Last week, we started the season with Beckett finding out the full story of her mother’s murder and she struck a deal with the politician involved. Also, her relationship with Castle got real as they decided to start dating.
Beckett/Castle Drama:
Beckett and Castle are discussing how to handle their relationship while in public. They both decide to pretend to be single while at work and “act normal”. Seeing as Castle has always been in love with Beckett he overcompensates which leads everybody to think something is either weird or really good between them. Beckett is expected to be sleeping with someone but Laney doesn’t think it’s with Castle. He’ll definitely want to prove to people that she’s with him. Since they decided to pretend to be single, he accepted when a bikini-clad interviewer asked him out. As he’s about to leave to meet her at the restaurant, Christina shows up at Castle’s place ready to seduce him, still in her bikini. Beckett gets pocket dialed as she’s attacking him and thinks he is being attacked so she goes to his place only to find him under Christina. Although initially angry, Castle solves the case from the gossip Christina tells him and then they make up after deciding only to tell people they’re dating others instead of actually doing it. I feel like this was the obvious decision to begin with, why Castle thought he would get away with even fake-dating someone known as the interviewer in a bikini is beyond me. At least he’s paid back when Beckett can’t kiss him because she still pictures Christina pushing her boobs into his face.
Esposito/Ryan Drama:
They still haven’t got over their grievances when Ryan didn’t back Beckett in to the finale from last season. It’s unfortunate that they’re not getting along because their such great friends and they’re always so fun together (their repartee is amazing, just google it). I understand that they need time to reconcile, and some of their angry bickering is really cute, but I just want them to be friendly again. Of course, Ryan could just continue to wear makeup to cover his black eye and everyone can rib him on that for a little while instead. By the end of the episode they’re starting to get back to their old selves when Esposito sees that Ryan took a punch for him. D’awwwwe, they can’t stay mad at each other for long!
The Case:
The weather girl, Mandy, was killed by a single gun shot after a struggle. They easily track down her cell phone and other stolen belongings to a man with priors for stalking and indecent exposure. They discover Mandy and the other weather girl, Rebecca, got in a fight the night of the murder. Although they immediately assume the lighter TV makeup on Mandy’s shirt was from the weather girl, I suspect one of the male reporters to be the killer. It’s too obvious to have an up and coming weather girl as the killer and if one of the men were rejected by her that’s reason for murder too. Once Rebecca’s alibi checks out, they look for Mandy’s secret lover. As Esposito and Ryan go to talk with Reggie, his bodyguard knocks Esposito out. Clearly, there are things he’s hiding, but if the bodyguard is arrested isn’t it easier to arrest the star as well? Once again, they’re rerouted after Reggie states him and Maggie were just friends. This time, they find out she was sent to the ER, but before that…she had a relationship with one of the reporters. Not that it seems to be of any importance just yet. She went into the ER after having an asthma attack while doing something on a “life or death” helicopter ride. They discover that Mandy realized a factory was emitting extensive toxic chemicals into the air and was threatened by that company before she was murdered. They realize she has a partner in her boyfriend, who turns out to be the killer like I predicted! She wanted to immediately reveal the story to help make lives better but he wanted to wait so he would get the exclusive. As he went to threaten her she fought back (good girl!) which lead to the him accidentally shooting and killing her.
More Thoughts:
Next episode brings an auction… Doesn’t that sound exiting? It didn’t really give me any good clues for what to expect in next episode, so we shall see next week!
I like that they aren’t causing any irreparable damage between either of the two major friendships of the show. The Castle/Beckett relationship is definitely going to be revealed to their friends soon after everybody seriously suspects it.
Things that would normally frustrate Beckett that Castle does didn’t seem to this week. When he was in front of the green screen (totally cute) and pretending to fly with the New York skyline behind him she just got really giggly which was adorable, but does this mean that the entertaining frustrations about each other will no longer bring added comedy? No, no it really won’t. I don’t think there is any way for them to lose their comedy.
