Interview with Danny Chait

Danny Chait is an indie rocker from New York. Danny has performed at music festivals such as CMJ Music Marathon in NYC and South by Southwest (SXSW) in Austin, TX. He released his first single “On” on June 12th. He will be releasing his debut EP this July! Check out our interview with Danny below, and be sure to purchase “On” on iTunes!

How did you get involved with music?

“I’ve just been doing it my whole life. My family is very into music — my grandmother was actually an opera singer, and my mom did music as well. It was an inbred thing. I’ve just been playing music ever since I can remember.”

What was it like to play SXSW?

“It was a lot of fun! I think South by South West is one of the coolest music experiences I’ve had. There are so many great people there and the vibe is amazing. I could barely get into my own show, it was that packed.”

Who are your musical influences?

“It ranges. I listen to rock, indie rock, classical, jazz, etc. I really listen to everything. Some of my favorite artists are Simon & Garfunkel, Joni Mitchell, Pavement, Weezer, and Nirvana.”

What was it like having your first single “On” released?

“It was really cool! I went on my iPhone at like 12:01 and went on iTunes to see it. I’m used to doing that for other musicians, so it was cool to see my own name up there. It was exciting.”

How would you describe your sound?

“It’s so hard for me to talk about my own music in that way. There’s definitely guitars in it and it is guitar based. It’s melodic. I don’t try to control too much with my music. I just let it come out as is.”

What was your writing process like for your EP “The Back Room” which will be released this July?

“That was an interesting process. I wrote some of the songs a long time ago. Most of the songs on this EP were just demos. I’ve been collecting demos over the years. A close friend of mine sifted through them and helped pick the ones that hit us. This EP is a compilation of different demos and their final drafts. It’s been a long process, but I’ve enjoyed it.”

What is your favorite song off of “The Back Room”?

“My favorite song changes every day. I’m so critical of my own music. Some days I’ll really like one song, then another day I’ll really like another song. Some days I even hate the entire thing [jokingly]. It’s a day-to-day thing.”

Do you have any plans to tour?

“That is the goal. I’m open to any touring opportunity and looking for an opportunity.”

What would your dream tour be?

“Opening for Weezer would be pretty cool. When I heard the “Blue” album I would try to miss school just to see ‘Buddy Holly’ on MTV.”

What is your favorite TV show?

“I’m in love with premium channels right now. My favorite show on TV right now is ‘Dexter’.”
