DC’s Legends of Tomorrow: Doctor Who meets the Avengers

Superheroes are all the rage these days, and rightfully so. Not only are we seeing hoards of superhero TV shows and movies frequently, we are seeing good superhero TV shows and movies frequently. Arguably, one of the best things to come out of the sudden superhero surge is DC’s shared TV universe. Starting with the premiere of Arrow on the CW, the TV verse was eventually joined by The Flash, Gotham, Constantine, and Supergirl, each of which has not only expanded the TV verse story-wise, but also improved upon the quality of the collective universe.

The newest addition to this already well-established shared universe is DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, which will begin airing on the CW starting Thursday, January 21st at 8:00 p.m.

While the previous productions of the universe have focused on a singular superhero (or city, in the case of Gotham) aided by an extended team comrades, Legends of Tomorrow will be focusing not only on multiple main characters but also switching between time and place in its storytelling. The concept is refreshing and somewhat new in the world of superheroes.

So what exactly is Legends of Tomorrow about? Well, to put it succinctly: it’s an American TV show version of Doctor Who meets the Avengers. The series will focus on a ragtag group of “Legends” who are brought together by Rip Hunter, a Time Master from the 22nd century, who has come back in time to help save the world from the immortal and power-hungry Vandal Savage, a villain we were previously introduced to in the most recent Farrow (The Flash and Arrow) cross-over. Our somewhat super-powered heroes will be traveling through time and space with Rip Hunter to find ways of defeating Vandal Savage before he can amass enough power to destroy the world. It’s time-traveling, superheroes, and mystical mythology all beautifully sculpted into one really fun show.

The “Legends” roster includes characters we have been previously introduced to through The Flash and Arrow, and it will be very interesting to see all of them come together as an unlikely team. The show will see the return of Sara Lance aka White Canary (played by Caity Lotz), Leonard Snart aka Captain Cold (played by Wentworth Miller), Mick Rory aka Heatwave (played by Dominic Purcell), Ray Palmer aka The Atom (played by Brandon Routh), Professor Stein aka one-half of Firestorm (played by Victor Garber), Jefferson “Jax” Jackson aka the other half of Firestorm (played by Franz Drameh), Kendra Saunders aka Chay-Ara aka Hawkgirl (played by Ciara Renee), and Carter Hall aka Khufu aka Hawkman (played by Falk Hentschel), who will be accompanied by Time Master Rip Hunter (played by Arthur Darrell). Hunter has brought these people together because they are known as legends in the future the the comes from.

Among its roster, Legends of Tomorrow has very rich and interesting characters played by an incredibly talented cast. While some of these characters share a brief history, others will meet for the first time in the premiere. It will be very exciting to see how our rag-tag team of superheroes will come together with the fate of the world hanging on their shoulders and fit into each other’s lives. Even coming from stark different realities, our characters might just find they the have quite a few things in common, and how putting their different backgrounds and experiences together can help them become a great team. The show, with its mixed strokes of fantasy, sci-fi, and action, will be chartering into somewhat new territory for superheroes, and will be exploring a very refreshing mash-up of genres. Let us know what your thoughts and expectations are from the show in the comments below!

Don’t forget to tune-in on Thursday, January 21st, at 8:00 p.m. on the CW to catch the premiere of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.
