Wentworth Season 1: The Reasons to Watch on Netflix

I just finished watching Season 1 of the prison drama Wentworth on Netflix and I totally agree with the tagline for the series- Drama With Conviction.

It is an amazingly compelling look at life in a woman’s prison.  In my opinion, here are the best reasons to begin watching this gritty series:

  • It shows a true look at prison life:

The prison scenes are some of the most realistic I’ve ever seen on television. Wentworth doesn’t hold back, you get all the violence and danger one would expect from being locked up.  The woman are divided into separate groups headed by women who are mortal enemies.  Loyalty to one will most certainly guarantee retaliation by the other, meaning serious bodily harm that will require several weeks in the prison infirmary. There are also scenes involving body strip searches that are graphic.

  • The characters and their stories are analyzed:

Both the prisoners and the guards are thoroughly analyzed.  Most of the time when you watch movies about prison, the characters are stereotypes that make it easy to spot the hero and villain. Wentworth is different.  Sure, there are characters that have done things that will leave you booing, hissing and clapping when they receive their comeuppance, but you get the ‘why’ along with the ‘what’.  The viewer will see how these people became who they are.  I found myself developing new sympathy for different characters with each episode.  The definition of a well-written character is one that will keep you guessing and Wentworth has several of those.

  • The plot twist:

Point A doesn’t necessary lead to Point B on Wentworth.  There are plot twists that you will not see coming.  If you like ‘WOW’ moments, this is the show for you.  Good television is full of surprises that keep you guessing and coming back for more. Wentworth did that for me.

  • Binge Worthy Drama:

Quite simply, Wentworth is so darn good that you’ll want to binge.  The anticipation of waiting for the next episode will be a crime. Well, at least you’ll be watching the perfect show when you commit it.

The opinions expressed in this article are entirely my own and not that of Talk Nerdy With Us.  If you have anything you’d like to add about Wentworth, I’d love to hear it in the Comments.
