Jane the Virgin: What Target Was Jane Trying to Reach?

downloadJane the Virgin hit the target in more ways than one in the episode “Chapter Twenty-Nine”.  This article contains spoilers so if you haven’t seen the episode, please do not continue reading.

Promos for “Chapter Twenty-Nine” showed a family Black Friday shopping outing, Mateo’s and apparently Rafael’s first.  But the episode was more than about Black Friday shopping.  Jane was determined to find a quality part-time babysitter/nanny for Mateo and wasn’t going to settle for a bargain rip-off where the care of her son was concerned.  Jane had some experience with babysitting and knew what to look for in a candidate.  This is one of the most difficult choices facing many mothers today.  Since the majority of women work, they are forced with leaving their child in the hands of someone else.  Jane is not only a working mom but also a student, so she has a lot on her plate.  Again, the support of her family continues to be a blessing Jane can be thankful for.  Nanny interviews included her mother Xo.

The targets the episode were trying to hit not only included Jane’s mom/student balancing act but the revival of  Rogelio’s career.  Let’s face it, Rogelio may not be the most talented actor on-screen, but off-screen, he oozes personality, charm and humor.  It’s easy to see why Xo fell in love with him.  An over-the-top diva, be it male or female would probably be an annoying character, but Jaime Camil makes Rogelio so endearing that you want him to have career success.  Plus, for anyone who has never seen a telenovela, Jane the Virgin’s take on it makes you want to dive right in and find the nearest one to watch.

With so much going on, at times Jane the Virgin seems to be a hotbed of activity. And granted, some of the storylines are ridiculously over the top.  But due to the creativeness of the writers and the talent of the cast, the characters never become caricatures. Season 2 is shaping to be one of many twists and turns.

Jane the Virgin airs Mondays at 9/8c on The CW.
