A hero is someone who sacrifices for the greater good. Sleepy Hollow’s Abbie Mills proved she is a true hero in every sense of the word. If you haven’t seen the winter finale episode “Novus Ordo Seclorum” please do not continue reading as this article contains spoilers.
As one of the two witnesses along with Ichabod Crane, Abbie Mills has faced both mythological and biblical evil while fighting the good fight. She has suffered loses but through it all, she refused to give up believing that good would always triumph over evil.
Her relationship with her sister Jenny was strained for many years due to childhood events that separated the two. In addition to making up for lost time, Abbie and Jenny were working towards repairing the damage to their sisterly bond. Abbie felt that she had let Jenny down when she needed her the most. The elder Mills didn’t want Jenny to ever feel abandoned again.
So when Jenny goes missing, Abbie is determined to get her back.
As “Novus Ordo Seclorum” was the winter finale and due to Sleepy Hollow’s history for having their main characters struggle their way out of peril, viewers were definitely prepared for a battle of epic proportions. Ichabod, Abbie and Joe were up against Pandora and a godly deity, The Hidden One, who Pandora raised with the help of the Shard. Jenny’s abduction was needed in order for the god to use the power she had emanating from the Shard. But to this viewer, it felt like some strange mating ritual with Pandora thrown in the mix.
Although the episode wasn’t as action based as previous Sleepy Hollow winter finales, the emotional moments packed a punch. Joe, in his desperation to get Jenny back, was considering becoming a Wendigo again. But it was the final moments of the episode that viewers will be talking about for months until Sleepy Hollow’s return. Abbie and team find Jenny and in order to free her, Abbie pulled a “Buffy”. Remember when Buffy saved Dawn in the episode“The Gift” and traded her life for the life of her sister?
The moment when Ichabod realized what Abbie was planning to do and his “Abbie” at the conclusion of the episode was heart-wrenching. The fate of Agent Abigail Mills is unknown until Sleepy Hollow returns in the spring.
