SHH. Sera Miller, a bartender in Chicago, has found herself at the scene of more brutal murders than she can count. She wakes up in a strange motel room, with a man she doesn’t know, or at least doesn’t know well, who is either dead or dying; the room newly decorated with blood, body parts and assorted viscera. It’s happened enough that Sera is unsurprised and knows exactly how to get out of the motel without leaving a trace of identifiable evidence.
In this fast paced thriller, AJ Mullican takes the reader on a roller coaster ride of horror, repulsion and mystery. Starting with the first page her story gets a good grip on you and doesn’t let go until you’ve read the last word. I was left shaking and sweaty as I turned the last page. My muscles were cramped and I wished there were more pages to read. AJ paints a picture of violence that will make some people cringe and if you have a weak stomach, you may want to skip this story. That said, the violence plays an important role and I couldn’t imagine the story without the graphic images drawn by AJ’s words.
I selected this as one of my Halloween weekend reads and it delivered chills a plenty. This book is well-written and well-edited. There were very few (I think actually only one) typos and the prose is tight with well-constructed sentences, paragraphs and chapters. If you enjoy the macabre and a little (OK, a lot) of blood and gore don’t bother you, run, don’t walk to Amazon and put this in your cart. You will not be sorry. This is AJ Mullican’s debut novel and here’s hoping they keep coming!
