Echoes in the Past,
Whispers of Secrets,
Can be Deadly and End a Life Fast
The theme of Sleepy Hollow’s recent episode “Whispers in the Dark” was that secrets can kill.
Both Abbie and Ichabod were forced to confront past secrets in order to defeat the supernatural entity known as a wraith who was menacing Sleepy Hollow, leaving death and destruction in its wake.
The greatest strength of the episode was that the writers have brought back what viewers love about the show, Abbie and Ichabod, the two Witnesses working together to defeat evil. Additionally, the playful banter between the two was definitely in full force, evident in the opening scene in which Abbie playful teased Ichabod when she catches him doing laundry. Viewers are aware that what Abbie and Ichabod have to deal with is dangerous and life-threatening, but seeing them working together with the ‘it’s you and me against the world’ attitude makes anything possible. Tom Mison and Nikki Beharie are powerful actors with chemistry that is off the charts.
It was also great to see the return of Zach Appleman as Joe Corbin. Having this character paired with Jenny Mills will be a positive thing on many levels. As August Corbin’s son, he is following in his dad’s supernatural evil fighting footsteps and adds to an already dynamic ensemble cast.
It remains to be seen what the two newest additions, Nikki Reed and Shannyn Sossamon bring to the show. Sossamon’s Pandora has promise as long as it doesn’t take too long to learn what her motivation for her actions are. Being evil for evil’s sake is often a turn-off. However, Reed’s Betsy Ross feels a little forced, especially in the flashback scenes with Ichabod. Hopefully, the character’s storyline will become stronger as the episodes progress.
Sleepy Hollow appears to be taking a step in a welcome direction.
Sleepy Hollow airs Thursdays at 9/8c on FOX.
