They say our mothers shape who we become.
Last season, fans of The Vampire Diaries got to meet the (long presumed dead) mother of vampire brothers Stefan and Damon Salvatore, Lillian.
Apparently, news of her death was greatly exaggerated. Well, sort of. Yes, she did die in the 1800s from consumption, but she didn’t stay dead. Instead she was turned into a vampire.
That wasn’t the whole story. Lillian became a Ripper. A cruel, bloodthirsty vampire the kills for the pleasure of it, just like son Stefan once was. Like mother, like son. She also become the “mother” to a dangerous coven of witch vampires.
As portrayed by Annie Wersching, Lillian is a character with many layers. She is a vampire who has murdered many, but viewers can’t help feeling sympathy for her. Stefan adored his mother and even though she can no longer feel it, Lillian adored him once too. She has shown that she can be loving and protective as witnessed by her devotion to her new family.
With the departure of Nina Dobrev as Elena, The Vampire Diaries was short a female character to add complication to the lives of Stefan and Damon. Lillian does just that!
She’s deliciously evil, but in a way that transforms her above the standard villain.
Here’s hoping Annie Wersching’s Lillian takes up permanent residence in Mystic Falls.
The Vampire Diaries season premiere airs Thursday, October 8, 2015 at 8/7c.
