General Hospital: Prognosis Good

Soaps are a dying breed and the casualties have been numerous over the last decade. Currently, only four soaps remain- General Hospital, Days of Our Lives, The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful.

General Hospital, which premiered on April 1, 1963, is the longest running of the four remaining.  It appears to have been given new life by reaching into its history.  They resurrected the former mob family, The Jeromes, as a foil for dimpled monster Sonny Corinthos, played by Emmy winner and fan favorite Maurice Bernard. Olivia Jerome portrayed by Maura West, another Emmy winner has given Sonny a daughter and viewers a classic villainess.

Former characters have returned and new characters have also helped to keep this over a half century soap alive.

But, the biggest storyline of General Hospital’s past year focused on Luke Spencer and his personality disorder stemming from an unspeakable family tragedy. Anthony Geary once again proved what a brilliant actor he is and why his awards and accolades are well deserved.  Geary’s storyline also introduced an unheard about sister Patricia and her daughter Valerie, who has quickly become a fan favorite.

Sadly, Anthony Geary is leaving General Hospital and his departure will be felt by the show and fans alike (as an aside note, my mom kept my sister Tracy and I out from high school the day Luke and Laura married in 1981. We watched the wedding live, because these were the days before the VCR, DirectTV and smart phone viewing).  But with great characters in place, General Hospital won’t suffer a code blue with Geary gone.

With new story lines and characters, it doesn’t seem this hospital will close for business any time soon.
