'Community' — Season 4 Premiere Recap(?)

This night’s episode of ‘Community; was absolutely hilarious, full of pop culture references and jokes just funny enough to not be offensive—and it had a sensitive side as well, a deep look into the characters’ personalities beyond their shallow exterior that drew ‘aww’s’ from across the globe and plot twists that none of us saw coming. Overall, a brilliant, shocking episode and a strong start to a new season that many had little hope for.

All of this was, of course, despite NBC not actually airing it.

If you happened to be on Twitter at the right time, you might have noticed a trending topic on the charts. Namely, #darkest401, which reached #2 on the US trends. That’s right—we trended an episode that didn’t actually air. That’s because, in a staunch refusal to accept reality as usual, the Community fanbase came together and decided to threaten NBC in the most passive-aggressive way possible.

Everyone live-Tweeted an episode that didn’t actually happen.

Though if it had, it would have been awesome—if you believe the Tweets, it was directed by Joss Whedon and was the most meta of them all, with the cast doing a parody of their own show and Jeff vanishing into thin air, Pierce dying, and having such a complex storyline that it only made sense if it was played backwards. And that’s not even scratching the surface.

Luckily, it wasn’t only the fans that got on board with this whole thing. The cast and crew shot us a little video, assuring us that whenever the premiere airs, it will be on October 19th….in our hearts. After all, in the words of Joel McHale, the Halloween episode is gonna be really awesome in February, right?

Stay strong, Community fandom. One day we’ll convince NBC that we’re not going away. Maybe we’ll just have to, say, make them pick up a show they canceled and trend a non-existent episode on Twitter. But what sort of crazy people would do that, right!

And this is where I’d put the airing date of the next episode of Community…IF I HAD ONE.
